Product overview

Wegovy 2.4 mg: semaglutide injection for chronic weight management

Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist from Novo Nordisk. It is used, together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, to reduce excess body weight and maintain the reduction in adults and children aged 12 and over with obesity, and in adults with overweight who also have a weight-related condition. In the US it is also indicated to reduce the risk of major cardiovascular events in adults with established cardiovascular disease and obesity or overweight.

2.4 mg is the highest strength in the standard injection range and the maintenance strength in the labelled escalation plan. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine. We supply it to licensed healthcare professionals and licensed pharmacies only, and the prescriber decides which strength a patient receives.

Rules on prescribing, importing and supplying it differ between countries, and the buyer is responsible for making sure the purchase and use are lawful where they practise.
  • Boxed warning (US label): semaglutide caused thyroid C-cell tumours in rodents, and whether it does so in humans is unknown. It must not be used in patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or with Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2.

What each component does

Semaglutide

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a gut hormone involved in appetite and in how the stomach empties. The medicine is used together with diet and physical activity.

The full list of excipients is in the patient leaflet supplied with the pen.

How to use

How Wegovy is used

General information for healthcare professionals. The prescriber and the product leaflet decide the strength, schedule and duration for each patient. This page does not give a dosing plan.

Step by step

  1. Prescriber assessment

A prescriber confirms the indication and checks the contraindications and warnings listed below, including thyroid history, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and diabetes treatment.

  2. Strength chosen by the prescriber

Wegovy is escalated in steps under the prescriber’s direction. 2.4 mg is the maintenance strength in the labelled plan.

  3. Weekly injection

Given under the skin of the abdomen, thigh or upper arm, once a week, following the leaflet.

  4. Used with lifestyle measures

The label indicates use alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

  5. Follow-up

The prescriber reviews tolerability and response, and decides how long treatment continues.

Administration notes

Do not combine with other GLP-1 products. The US label does not recommend use with other semaglutide-containing products or any other GLP-1 receptor agonist.

  • Patients on insulin or sulfonylureas may need their dose reviewed because of hypoglycaemia risk.
  • Wegovy delays gastric emptying and may affect the absorption of oral medicines.
  • Patients should tell their care team about planned surgery or procedures that need anaesthesia or deep sedation.
  • Use a new needle for each injection where the presentation requires one, and dispose of sharps in a sharps container.
