Saxenda (liraglutide 3 mg) is a prescription GLP-1 receptor agonist from Novo Nordisk. It is used, together with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, for chronic weight management in adults with obesity, or with overweight and at least one weight-related condition, and in adolescents aged 12 to under 18 with obesity who weigh more than 60 kg.

What each component does
Liraglutide
Liraglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist. GLP-1 is a gut hormone involved in appetite and in how the stomach empties. Liraglutide is also sold at lower strengths under a different brand for type 2 diabetes. Saxenda is the 3 mg weight-management product and the two should not be confused.

Prescriber assessment
A prescriber confirms the indication and checks the contraindications and warnings listed below, including thyroid history, pancreatitis, gallbladder disease and diabetes treatment.

Gradual escalation
The label uses stepwise dose escalation to reduce gastrointestinal symptoms. The prescriber follows the label schedule and may slow it.

Given under the skin of the thigh, upper arm or abdomen once a day, following the leaflet.

Administration notes
Do not combine with other GLP-1 products. Saxenda should not be used with other liraglutide products or with any other GLP-1 receptor agonist.
- Patients on insulin or sulfonylureas may need their dose reviewed because of hypoglycaemia risk.
- Remove and discard the needle after every injection and store the pen without a needle attached.
- Dispose of sharps in a sharps container.
Storing and handling Saxenda
Store in a refrigerator at 2 °C to 8 °C, not next to the cooling element. Do not freeze, and do not use a pen that has been frozen.
The US label allows the pen to be kept for 30 days at 15 °C to 30 °C or in the refrigerator. Keep the cap on when not in use.
Keep the pen away from excessive heat and sunlight.
Do not use a pen that has been frozen, is damaged, or contains discoloured liquid or particles. Dispose of used pens and needles in a sharps container in line with local rules.
